Welcome to TikTok's "edutainment," an innovative learning approach to combining education with entertainment. Katie Lamb, a technician at the University of Liverpool, and Glenn Hurst, an associate professor at the University of York, discussed how they used TikTok in conjunction with pedagogical frameworks to promote public scientific involvement. The educational content on TikTok today has more than 100 million monthly users.
In the same sense, Middle Eastern content creators have utilized TikTok to display their talent. Sumaya Salim, an Emirati content creator, believes that "in my personal opinion, and after many months of creating content on TikTok, I believe that the platform adds a lot of benefits to education where youth can gain access to a variety of educational content to different languages, cultures, and lifestyles. Our goal as content creators is to build a better society by connecting with youth and building a better community."
The business started its Learn on TikTok programs to encourage educators to upload instructional content in a fun way. Azoz Al Ruwaili, a content creator from KSA, states, "TikTok education teaches all of us a lesson: learning should be fun. Simple and useful educational content should be easy to access. Especially in the Middle East, where we have a lot of emerging educational content creators who are creatively using the platform to educate learners on certain concepts."
Given that Gen Z's attention span is only eight seconds, educational content on TikTok is ideal for piquing their curiosity. Shehab AL Hashimi, a content creator from UAE, believes "the importance of TikTok is in summarizing information in a direct way that allows the viewer to delve deeper and increase the scientific and research sources on the topics of the videos he watched on the platform." Similarly, Wajih Al Khiami, a content creator from Syria, stated that "generation Z grew up in the age of speed. That is why they are looking for short useful information that helps them in their daily lives in various fields. TikTok platform is one of the first platforms that invented this idea."
It's also perfect for people who don't want to spend hours sitting down and studying. Fun is the most crucial component of education. Tarek Harmoush, an educational content creator from Lebanon, believes that "TikTok is a promising social media platform that can be used in teaching, especially when we start a new lesson. TikTok can act as a great hook."
TikTok has already collaborated with academic organizations, such as the #EduTok campaign in India. It's Generation Z's (free) response to Masterclass, a website where you can learn anything online from a subject matter expert.
Jad, known on TikTok as "lifewithjad," a content creator from Lebanon, believes that "with the rise of digital knowledge, if monitored correctly, TikTok could be a great source of knowledge and progression on a mental level." Staying informed and bringing change is the trend for a lifetime! Hashem Kaddoura, a content creator from UAE, believes that "TikTok & other social media, are playing a big role in reforming our consciousness & norms, so, we must be very smart to classify the huge info. to classify the good/true and accept it, & ignore the rest."
The spirit of Gen Z on TikTok transcends generations. Not only are they ready to call out injustice or put up a fight, but they also feel for each other.
In a nutshell, TikTok has changed the educational game, "some years ago, if you wanted to learn any new topic or skill, you would go over Google or YouTube. However, the new generation is changing the game. We see experts from different fields educating their followers on TikTok. TikTok is no longer an entertainment platform; it is rising to become one of the most powerful educational ones." Loai Hesham, a TikTok content creator from Egypt, once expressed.
