Artificial intelligence AI refers to the technology that enables machines to perform tasks in many fields, specifically engineering fields. It is still upgrading day by day to mimic human intelligence and perform tasks that usually require human involvement. This technology outbreak caused dramatic consequences in every field, especially my field of study, biomedical engineering.
Recently, AI has had many impacts in the biomedical aspect. Starting with positive impacts, AI can accelerate drug discovery progress by analyzing vast amounts of data, predicting drug-target interactions, and identifying potential candidates. This improves the efficiency of research and development. It can also help in imaging and diagnostics, such that AI algorithms can analyze medical images like X-rays. In addition, artificial intelligence-powered robots can assist surgeons during complex procedures, providing many techniques. This may reduce risk, shorten recovery times, and improve surgical outcomes. On the other hand, it may affect it negatively, such that the implantation of AI in the health field may lead to high costs and shift optimal health care towards people with high economic levels. In addition to what is stated, artificial intelligence may hurt the engineers themselves. It may lead to their job displacement. The roles that depend on data analysis or repetitive tasks may be susceptible to automation. Therefore, we are facing pros and cons for the technology that will mark our future.
Based on experts’ opinions, AI can be more beneficial because it can contain more explanations in its decisions to gain the trust of patients and healthcare professionals. By explaining more, AI can provide the reason behind its explanations and recommendations to facilitate collaboration between humans and machines and to achieve more credibility.
To sum up, as artificial intelligence continues to advance, it is having positive and negative impact on all engineering fields, specifically the biomedical field. So, what’s next? Will AI dominate the world? Or will it replace humans' positions?
