Our gender is not a tool of governance
Lebanese laws are increasingly influenced by religious law, particularly in regulating family matters, which disproportionately affects women.

Nearly a century ago, the Nazi regime adopted Article 175, criminalizing sexual acts (Unzucht) between men and subjecting offenders to imprisonment. This historical fact is a stark reminder of past discriminatory practices.
On July 22, 2023, Hassan Nasrallah, who pulls the strings in Lebanon, explicitly incited violence against gay and lesbian individuals. He called for their harm, urged the use of derogatory terms, and advocated for a collective response to homosexuality without any limitations.
Furthermore, Lebanon's Minister of Culture and Judge, Muhammad Wissam Al Mortada, signed a Lebanese project law imposing penalties of imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of five hundred million Lebanese pounds for acts that explicitly or implicitly promote what is referred to as 'deviant sexual relations contrary to nature,' commonly known as homosexuality, or incite such behavior. This law raises concerns about human rights and Lebanon's commitment to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR), ratified in 1972, which upholds the right to freedom of expression, assembly, and association without discrimination.
Lebanese laws are increasingly influenced by religious law, particularly in regulating family matters, which disproportionately affects women. This shift away from secularism is evident in the ban on civil marriages in favor of religious ones.
What is even more concerning is the adoption of a psychological perspective in discussions on these matters, as seen in Europe during the 18th century. This shift highlights the evolving dynamics of power and control over sexuality, as observed by Michel Foucault:
'We can see it; it is the sexuality apparatus that, in its various strategies, establishes this idea of 'sex.' One should not imagine an autonomous instance of sex that would subsequently produce the multiple effects of sexuality throughout its contact surface with power. On the contrary, sex is the most speculative, the most ideal, the most internal element in a sexuality apparatus that power organizes in its control over bodies, their materiality, their forces, their energies, their sensations, their pleasures.'
These developments emphasize the urgent need to address human rights and social justice issues in Lebanon, promoting tolerance, equality, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.
