The media is the main means of mass communication. It’s used for broadcasting, publishing, journalism, and much more. Social media can affect a teen’s life in both good ways and bad ways. How is that? Is it safe? Why?
First, social media is a way of entertainment and self-expression. It provide space for teens to express themselves and meet people with the same likes and dislikes across the world and help them find their people; the people they can continue their lives with.
Second, social media platforms may be a source of inspiration. It helps people especially teens develop their creativity and their ways of thinking outside the box. It gives teens new ideas which can also affect their personality at a point helping them open their mind to new things. In fact, some teenagers changed their way of thinking and became a lot more open minded.
However, social media can also be dangerous, especially talking to strangers. A lot of older people pretend to be younger by posting fake pictures on fake accounts to gain teen’s trust to take advantage of them, kidnap them, or even murder them; this has been the case of Jane doe, a 12 years-old girl who went missing after trusting a stranger on the internet and giving him her address back in November the 10th of 2014.
Finally, social media websites make teens think that what is being posted by skinny, thin shaped models is the “perfect” body but there is no such thing as “perfect body”. Such misleading message can have a negative effect on the child’s self-esteem and confidence which can also lead to a lot of mental health issues. Some people get depressed, sad, anxious, and even suicidal because they think that they are not accepted for the way they look or the shape of their body and some even starve themselves almost to death to get the body they think is the one they are supposed to have.
To sum up, social media has both its advantages and disadvantages. If used correctly it can be a powerful tool, but teenagers should be well educated on the danger present on these platforms. Parents should be well informed and warn their kids about every danger that might occur, and teens should learn how to really use it.
